The riots in Bristol have been several of the worst viewed in England during the nineteenth century. They commenced when Sir Charles Wetherall, who was against the Reform Invoice, came to open the Assize Court in his role as Recorder, or senior judge. Assize courts were held in the most crucial county towns and presided over by visiting judges from
